Upon arrival the view couldn’t be more inspiring. Vineyards orderly take over the grounds and make known the typical different stocks producers of Madeira wine. At Quinta do Furão grape-gathering is still done as in the old days, and September guests are welcome to participate in the traditional gathering and pressing of grapes. Paths outlined in the gardens lead us to the main house, a magnificent building lodging a restaurant, a pub, a wine-cellar and an handicrafts shop where embroidery made in Madeira can be bought. There is enough amusement available at Quinta do Furão but it’s within the silence of the hotel that best pleasures are relished, like having a good cup of tea and scones, playing billiards or admiring the scenery stretching out of sight beyond the vineyards.
